Alan Kaufman & the A-Kays

Alan Kaufman

Alan is an award winning old-time fiddler, mandolinist, guitarist, songwriter, and yodeler who first appeared on the scene in New York City is the 70’s as a founding member of the legendary Oldtime Stringband – the Wretched Refuse . He is the author of the classic manual for the novice fiddler – Beginning Oldtime Fiddle (Oak Publications 1977 – still in print). Since moving to Boston in 1997 he has become one of the mainstays of the old-time music scene there – leading a legendary jam at the Skellig Pub in Waltham on Sunday evenings for the last seven years. Recently he has teamed together with banjoist Marc Horowitz and guitarist Martin Grosswendt to form the A-Kays a very powerful, driving, and exciting old-time string band

Marc has toured the world with artists ranging from the Phoenix singers, Doc Watson, Steve Goodman, Vassar Clements, Frank Wakefield, Oscar Brand, Tom Paxton, and Judy Collins. He is a superb banjo player in the clawhammer and bluegrass styles as well as a formidable mandolinist.

Martin GrosswendtMartin Grosswendt is a legend in his own time having been the backup musician on many ‘Philo’ recordings in the 70’s including Utah Phillips and Jim Ringer and a host of others.

Mike Kenney is an accomplished bass and fiddle player who daytime job is repairing and restoring fine violins at Rutman’s Violins in Boston
